Intercontinental Fligths from European Airports: towards Hub Concentration or Not?
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper empirically analyzes changes in the supply of non-stop intercontinental flights from European airports. We take advantage of OAG data for air services from a rich sample of European airports to intercontinental destinations in the period 20042008. Results of the empirical analysis indicate a tendency towards a more balanced distribution of intercontinental flights across European airports. We also find that the demographic size of a region, its sector specialization, the political role of its central city and the proportion of connecting traffic explain the amount of and changes in long-haul air services supplied from European airports. .

Do European Carriers dominate their Hubs?
We analyze the phenomenon of hub dominance by developing a model relating fares to distance, using the main leg of intercontinental flights for scaling purposes. Our results indicate that at least some of the major European carriers place a mark up on flights originating from or going to their hubs.
متن کاملHuber , Finger 1 EUROPEAN AIRLINE NETWORKS – WHICH STRATEGY FOR AIRLINES ?
Airline networks may be interpreted as structures that express strategic choices made by airlines to serve or not to serve given airports. Research into network strategies of airlines in the past has focused on economies (of density) and market power. More recent research focuses on managerial decisions related to capacity choices, such as the frequency or scheduling of flights, which are relat...
متن کاملTowards a Hub-and-Spoke Network: a Study on the Chinese Mainland Hub Airport Planning
The airlines reorganization will accelerate the switch of the Chinese mainland civil aviation system from a former point-to-point (PP) structure to a hub-and-spoke (HS) network. In such a context, the major efforts of our paper are put into identifying hub airports in mainland China. We first analyze the HS network’s competitive advantages and find four desirable hub characteristics. A three-le...
متن کاملAn Application of the Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Analysis to the Selection of a New Hub Airport
The paper illustrates the application of three Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods to the problem of the selection of a new hub airport for a hypothetical European Union (EU) airline assumed to operate within the EU liberalised air transport market. The three MCDM methods used are SAW (Simple Additive Weighting), TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Sol...
متن کاملNetwork Effects, Congestion Externalities, and Air Traffic Delays: Or Why All Delays Are Not Evil
We examine two factors that might explain the extent of air traffic delays in the United States: network benefits due to hubbing and congestion externalities. Airline hubs enable passengers to cross-connect to many destinations, thus creating network benefits that increase in the number of markets served from the hub. Delays are the equilibrium outcome of a hub airline equating high marginal be...
